The Hanham AGM was well attended with 9 or 10 of the members turning up for the annual gathering. A big thank you to you all for attending. The A team trophy was won by David Jones for this season. My reasons for this awarding was simply because he was happy to play despite the fact the was regularly and constantly in severe pain and never once said no. He had a poor season understandably but was always sitting there on board 3 no matter what!! It clearly showed us all his dedication and love for the game. The B team trophy was awarded by Kevin to Allen Bridgwood. The club championship for this year will be held on Tuesday August 14th. It is a chance for you all to claim the Hanham Chess Club crown. Also, Phil is preparing a selection of chess event evenings during the season closure including quick play tourneys and one or two puzzle evenings. He will post the timetable on the site when it's completed.

So the season has now finished for another year. Apologies by the way to Clifton C for not being able to field a team for our last fixture. We will do better next season (hopefully)!! In the meantime Phil is planning a bag of goodies for you all to prevent acute withdrawal symptoms during the summer season. He is a man with a plan but I am sure the goodies will include mini-tourneys, chess puzzles and some endgame problems for you to sweat over. And let's not forget the club championship usually held sometime in August. Events and dates to follow shortly on the site or contact Phil direct.

A warm welcome to Keith Bowers to the Hanham Chess Club. His first experience of his new surroundings was on April 24 and must have been totally bewildered by what he walked into!! Teams Hanham A and Yate A were holding a minute silence for our dear departed friend David Jones as he entered the Somerset room. If that wasn't bewildering enough, he ended playing a few games with Yate A's board 6 player as we were a man short. Sorry Keith, you choose the worst possible moment!! But fear not, things will only get better....

Thursday, September 8, 2016 Well the Hanham Chess Club B-team managed to do 2 things that the A-team didn't do this week. Firstly they managed to get on the score board and most of all we won our first match of the season. YEAH!

We traveled to the Malcolm X Community Centre to play Harambee. We enjoyed the background music of Kizomba & Samba classes. Phil, Kevin & Mike all managed to win their games to allow the B-team win 3-1.

Wednesday, September 7, 2016 Not the most auspicious start to the season for the Hanham Chess Club A-team losing 6-0 to Cabot A.Cabot outgraded us on all boards so it was always going to be an uphill battle. Despite this Glen looked like he was going to get a positive result against their super strong Board 1, until a blunder late into the game under time pressure.

The A-team will look forward to the return of Barry & Doreen to bolster the ranks for the season ahead.May we wish the B-team a better result in tomorrows game.If anyone wishes to play for us or a few friendly games please email us at

Friday, May 13, 2016 Hanham Chess Club will be running a stall at Hanham Community Fayre from 12pm till 4pm. If you fancy a game or a chat about joining our club or chess in general, please come and see us.

Wednesday, May 11, 2016 At our AGM last night we awarded our A & B player of the season awards last night. The A Team award was awarded to David & Kevin, while the B Team award was to Barry.
